Teen drivers in Illinois face many risks on the road. A new study found that distractions play a big role in car accidents among teenagers. The study's findings are not too surprising since we have all heard about the serious dangers of distracted driving and how it increases the risk of getting into a car crash.

The study by the University of Iowa found that distractions contributed to 60 percent of the 1,691 teen car accidents that were studied. The researchers analyzed in-car videos in the moments leading up the crashes to determine the cause of the accidents.

The researchers reported that several different types of distractions contributed to the car accidents. The specific distractions were:

  • Talking to other passengers in the vehicle
  • Cellphone use
  • Looking at something else in the vehicle
  • Looking at something outside the vehicle
  • Singing or dancing
  • Grooming
  • Reaching for something

These distractions can be very dangerous for all drivers. Any type of behavior that takes your eyes or attention away from the road is risky. Teenagers, parents and all drivers should be aware of the risks of being distracted behind the wheel and take steps to prevent distractions before they even start to drive.

Individuals should be proactive in preventing distractions to keep everyone safe on the road. Drivers who cause car accidents that injure or kill others can be held liable for their actions. If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident caused by distracted driving, contacting a personal injury attorney can help you explore your specific legal options.
