When a serious automobile accident takes place on an Illinois roadway, the investigation into the matter begins from the moment emergency responders arrive at the scene. While firefighters and emergency medical providers work to render aid to those harmed in a car accident, police officers begin assessing the scene of the accident. The results of the investigative process can include criminal charges or even a civil suit for personal injury or wrongful death.

Such may be the case in regard to a fatal accident that took place on I-255 in Edwardsville, Illinois. The crash occurred in the southbound lanes of travel just after 10:00 p.m. on a recent Monday. Police believe that a 24-year-old man was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of travel before crashing into a second vehicle.

The driver who was driving in the wrong direction lost his life in the accident. The other driver was injured and rushed to an area hospital for emergency medical treatment. There is no word on his current condition or the prognosis for his recovery.

When a car accident takes place and the person at fault dies in the incident, many Illinois residents believe that there is no avenue of legal recourse left for the victim or his or her family. This is not the case, however, as it is possible to sue the estate of the deceased driver for damages related to his or her actions. It is too early to know if that will be the outcome in this case, but the option to file a civil suit in the matter remains open to the man who was harmed during the wrong-way driving incident.
