Important ladder safety tips to follow

| Jul 19, 2017 | Workers' Compensation

Do you work in a field in which you regularly use a ladder? Are you sure of your ability to do so in a safe manner?

Even if you use a ladder day in and day out, there could come a time when you are part of a serious accident.

Here are several things you can do to give yourself the best chance of preventing a ladder accident:

  • Follow all instructions on the ladder
  • Never use a ladder that is defective, even if you have successfully done so in the past
  • Maintain three points of contact on the ladder at all times
  • Don’t use a ladder in slippery conditions, such as when it is raining
  • Don’t place a ladder on a sloped or soft surface
  • Make other workers aware of the fact that you are using a ladder, as this helps cut down on the chance of someone knocking it over
  • Never place a ladder on boxes or any other object in an attempt to make it reach higher
  • Use the proper angle to ensure safe climbing and descending
  • Never exceed the maximum load rating

When you take these key steps, you are in much better position every time you use a ladder.

If for any reason you are involved in a ladder accident, don’t wait to call for medical assistance. If you are unable to do so, ask that a coworker call for help on your behalf.

You should also report the accident to your employer right away, as you want to be clear that any injuries occurred at the job site.

Once you receive treatment and know what the future holds with regard to your health, you can then learn more about your legal rights. For example, you may be able to file a workers’ compensation claim. With this, you can receive regular payments until you are able to return to work.

A ladder accident can be serious, so make sure you get the medical help you require. Along with this, don’t do anything that will jeopardize your ability to receive workers’ compensation benefits.
