Most common driving distractions that don’t involve phone use

On Behalf of | Apr 9, 2018 | Car Accidents

Distracted driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving. The reason for this is that distracted drivers often display the same characteristics that drunk drivers do. For instance, if drivers are distracted, they will not be focused on the road and their reaction times will be slower. While cellphone use often gets the most attention when it comes to distracted driving, there are several behaviors that can lead to distractions behind the wheel.

By understanding the leading the causes of distracted driving, not only can you avoid engaging in them, but you might also have a better chance of identifying other drivers who are distracted. These are the most common causes of distracted driving:

Food & drink consumption

While it might make sense to eat breakfast on the way to work in order to save time, doing so could result in an accident. For example, if the lid falls off your to-go coffee and the hot liquid spills in your lap, you will probably take your eyes off the road. Those few seconds are enough for an accident to occur.

Grooming

Have you ever been in traffic and watched the driver in the car next to you shave or apply make-up? If so, you are not alone. While the scenario seems like the cliché of all overworked individuals, most people have seen it occur at least once or twice.

Pets

Transporting a pet can be difficult, especially if it does not occur on a regular basis. For instance, your cat probably only takes a car ride for the occasional vet visit. The chances are good that it doesn’t like it one bit. In order to keep your cat from trying to blind you or crawling down around your feet while you are trying to maneuver the brake or gas pedals, be sure to always use a pet carrier. The same holds true for your pooch. Transport Fido in a pet carrier, crate or harness that fastens to a seat belt. Not only will this help you to avoid distractions while behind the wheel, it will also help protect your pets if you do get involved in an accident.

In addition to the above, interacting with kids or other passengers, daydreaming, rubbernecking and even changing the temperature controls or radio station can cause enough of a distraction to result in a car wreck. While you can easily avoid these distractions, other drivers might not do the same. If you suffer an injury due to a car accident with a distracted driver, you might be able to file a claim and fight for compensation for the damages.
