Know common reasons for motor vehicle crashes

On Behalf of | Jul 1, 2019 | Car Accidents

As people venture out on the roadways during the warmer months of the year, they must ensure that they are prepared to do so safely. Many of the accidents that occur on the roads across this nation could be prevented if drivers just paid more attention to what is going on.

It is imperative that you are ready to handle anything that happens when you are driving. Understanding some of the more common causes of crashes can help to prevent them.

Know the risks

Around 33 percent of crashes are caused by drivers who drift into another lane. The only way that drivers can prevent this from happening is to watch where they are going at all times. You can’t pay attention to anything else because distractions can lead to not staying in your own lane. Distracted driving is the top cause of motor vehicle accidents in this country, so all drivers must be especially cautious about letting anything take their focus away from driving.

Other types of crashes that are common include rear-end wrecks, which account for 23 to 30 percent of all accidents; blind left turns, which make up 12 percent of crashes; loss of vehicle control, which accounts for 11 percent; and falling asleep while driving, which makes up 7 percent of crashes. Falling asleep at the wheel is one of the most deadly dangers, accounting for 21 percent of fatal wrecks.

Speeding and drunk driving can also lead to crashes. All drivers should remember that the posted speed limit is one that is generally safe in perfect road conditions. It is sometimes possible that it won’t be safe to drive that fast, so speed should be lowered to a safer level if there are hazards.

One factor you can’t control

Another factor that impacts safety on the road is rain. Remember that when it rains, the road becomes slick. This is especially true when the rain first begins because the water mixes with the vehicle fluids on the surface. As these fluids are washed off the road by the rain, the conditions might improve slightly. On top of this, stopping distance increases when the roads are slick so you have to pay close attention to what is going on around your vehicle.

When a car crash does happen, ensure that you are taking appropriate steps to cover your own interests. Contact the police department to investigate the accident. Seek medical care, even if you don’t think you have any injuries. Some injuries might be hidden at first. Once you know what’s going on, you have an option of seeking compensation in Illinois to cover any financial burdens due to the injury.
