Stay safe as you drive around semitrucks

On Behalf of | Jul 22, 2019 | Truck Accidents

Driving around semitrucks can be challenging. These large tractor-trailers have a size and weight advantage over passenger vehicles. While they do have some serious hazards associated with them, semitrucks are vital to this country’s economy.

It is easy to assume that truckers can always drive safely, but this isn’t always the case. There are several things that can lead to crashes, but fortunately, there are also ways that you can avoid them. The key point to remember is that you can’t control how other people drive, so you are always going to be at risk of being involved in an accident.

Remember that semis have large blind spots

A general rule of thumb is that if you can’t see a trucker in the truck’s side mirror, the trucker can’t see you. These trucks have huge blind spots all the way around them. You shouldn’t try to drive on the side of the semi because you don’t know when the trucker might need to change lanes. Instead, only stay in that area for as little time as possible.

Don’t assume that they can maneuver the same as others

The average vehicle that a person drives weighs around 3,400 pounds. A loaded tractor-trailer can weigh upwards of 80,000 pounds. These semis are also much longer than passenger vehicles. Because of the length and weight, they need more room to maneuver. You shouldn’t ever cut in front of them because they need additional time and space to stop. You should also avoid trying to drive around them when they are turning because the radius they require is large.

Use common sense

Common sense goes a long way when you are driving around semitrucks. If you are on the highway or interstate, ensure your vehicle is fully off the road if you have to pull over. Don’t try to weave in and out of traffic because doing so is unsafe.

If you are struck by a semitruck, take the same steps you would if you were hit by anyone else. Be sure to contact the police for an accident investigation and report. You might need medical care, so be sure to get checked by a doctor. You may choose to have an ambulance come to the scene to take you to the emergency room. You could also decide to wait to see your regular doctor if the injuries aren’t too bad. Whatever your decision, make sure that you preserve your rights to seek compensation for your injuries and other damages.
