When you're involved in a traffic accident, it's important that you get medical care. Most people who have injuries know that insurance should get involved if the other party has this coverage. If they don't, you might have to work with your own underinsured or uninsured policy to get compensation for the accident.

In both cases, it's smart to allow your attorney to take the lead. Insurance companies aren't necessarily trying to be unfair, but they do want to save as much money as possible by getting you to settle. That's why having a person trained to negotiate on your side is a must.

Why is it better to allow your attorney to speak with the insurance company?

There are many reasons to allow your attorney to take the lead in the case. Some of them include:

  • Letting you relax knowing that you don't have to handle the legal aspects of your case (other than to provide information or accept a settlement).
  • Giving you the peace of mind of knowing that they have experience in negotiating with insurance companies and know whom to interact with for the best results.
  • Understanding that your attorney can negotiate on your behalf for the highest possible settlement and will be able to give you tips on knowing when a settlement is fair or should be accepted.
  • Being able to represent you in court if you have to go to trial over the personal injury case.

Of course, there are many other reasons why you may choose to work with an attorney, but these are some that people find the most important.

At what point should you bring your attorney on to the case?

While you can hire an attorney at any point during your case, it's usually a good idea to speak with them as soon as you can. Why? The sooner they're involved in the case, the sooner they can get up-to-date on what happened and be able to help you. Attorneys who are involved from the beginning also have a better chance of helping you avoid errors, such as accepting a settlement that is far too small or feeling that you have no other option but to accept an offer due to the insurance agent's actions.

Your attorney has the insight and knowledge needed to support you when you make a claim, so you have the best chance of getting the compensation and support that you need for the future.
